About Kanji in Japanese language
Kanji Overview & Important Bushu (Radical)
Japanese Kanji came from China in the 5th to the 6th centuries. Then later Hiragana and Katakana evolved to represent "readings" in Japanese. There are about 15,000 characters used in modern Japanese, out of over 50,000 that exists.
Effective Kanji Learning - 2001.Kanji.Odyssey
There may be more than one reading for single Kanji, but not all readings are frequently used.
With most Japanese Kanji, only one or two readings per character are frequently used.
So it is necessary to separate important Kanji from less important Kanji, important readings from less important readings and focus on the vital things in order to learn Kanji efficiently.
