About numbers in Japanese writing
In modern Japanese we use two types of numbers, Sanyoo suuji and Kan suuji.
Sanyoo suuji refers to Arabic figures written as 1, 2, 3, 4.
Kan suuji refers to the Kanji numbers introduced in this book
YokoGaki and TateGaki
There are horizontal writing YokoGaki and vertical writing TateGaki in Japanese writing style.
Horizontal writing YokoGaki is common for business documents and websites, while vertical writing TateGaki is common for newspapers and novels.
Sanyoo suuji is commonly used in horizontal writing YokoGaki.
Kan suuji is commonly used in vertically written documents TateGaki.
Units like 百 (hundred), 千 (thousand) and 万 (ten thousand) are used in both vertical and horizontal writings, with both Sanyoo suuji and Kan suuji.
